“We should try to find her. What if she’s nearby?”
Ren Heming made a sound of agreement. He looked at the sun slanting westward and said, “It’s getting dark. While we look, let’s also find a place to rest for the night.”
Dong Zheng and Ren Heming walked out of the dilapidated temple. They looked around but didn’t see the footprints of the little girl.
Ren Heming called out for the girl in Farsi, but he didn’t get a response at all. She disappeared too suddenly, like water vapor evaporating under the sun.
Dong Zheng searched in silence, tilted his head, and saw a fallen stone slab standing crookedly on the dried grass not far away.
The stone slab was engraved with incomprehensible words and patterns that were half-rotten and unclear. And behind the monument was a dark tunnel entrance just like the one he’d encountered earlier in the day. The steps also sloped down into the unknown darkness, but this tunnel had no fishy, cloying stench.
It seemed to be indicating something.
“Shixiong!” Dong Zheng called out. “Come here.”
“Another one?” Ren Heming approached when he heard the sound. He knelt down and stroked the broken text on the stone tablet and asked, “Do you want to go in and take a look?”
Dong Zheng nodded. As Cui Zuojing had said, clues and opportunities were hidden in seemingly dangerous places, just like in the cave before when he’d found the stone
“Let’s go in and take a look.”
