NEBM Chapter 3: Double Return

The ice rock shredded the back of his hand, causing Shen Zhixian to draw in a hissing breath. However, the pain didn’t matter because this unlucky youth was already so heavily injured that he surely wouldn’t be able to withstand another wound.

He helped Yan Jin up, shook off the bunch of blood beading from his own wound, and pursed his lips. He couldn’t help sighing that he would hurt his hand before even succeeding in helping Yan Jin.

However, he could care less about himself. After all, the young man was moving too much, tearing open the wounds deep enough to expose the bones on his back. As a result, scarlet blood poured out.

“Don’t move…Hey, your wounds will reopen!”

Yan Jin’s mood was unstable. He looked at Shen Zhixian defensively and vigilantly, his eyes fierce and cruel with cold hatred.

This was strange.

It was because he was worried that Yan Jin would become angry that he had rushed up to see him. At this point in the plot, Yan Jin should be a normal, ordinary person. How could there already be such a deep-seated hatred?

As this vague thought crossed his mind, Shen Zhixian used one hand to hug the youth who was still struggling to push him away. Meanwhile, he used the other hand to open the jade bottle cap. Then, he tipped the medicine into the youth’s mouth.

In the end, Yan Jin suffered from severe injuries and lost too much blood. He had also been frozen for so long and so he lacked the strength to break free. As a result, he was forced to swallow a few medicinal pellets and elixir. They melted into his mouth, running like warm currents down his throat, and warmth gradually filled his chest and limbs. He froze, his struggles ceasing.

The man in front of Yan Jin looked slightly blurry, his appearance seemingly good-natured. But, Yan Jin knew that this was only an illusion. Even if this person turned to ashes, he could still recognize his breath!

He was Yan Jin’s good master! The good master who’d severed his spirit root!

Yan Jin gritted his teeth and pushed down his hatred.

No.

He couldn’t reveal any flaws yet.

At this time, Shen Zhixian was much stronger than him. If he rashly angered him, he was sure that the torture would come early.

Yan Jin propped his hands in the snow where the other person couldn’t see and tightly fisted them, leaving bloody crescent wounds where his nails had gouged into his palms. He gasped, lowered his head slightly, suppressed his hatred, and hoarsely said, “Master.”

The memory of his spirit root being severed made his body tremble with pain. He let out a cold breath and told himself over and over again.

He was alive.

He came back to life.

After Shen Zhixian cut off his spirit root inch by inch, he was…reborn.

He was familiar with this scene. After the Hidden Sword Pavilion incident, he received three lashes and went to the Cliff of Reflection. After reflecting for a whole month, his spirit root had frostbites, and he almost died before Shen Zhixian finally allowed him down the cliff.

After going down the mountain, he thought that he could breathe at last. Who knew that Shen Zhixian would soon stand in front of him and indifferently severed his spirit root?

Deeply in pain, he had fainted. But when he woke up again, Yan Shen was once again looking down at him meaningfully and telling him with a slight smile that Master had ordered him to go to the Cliff of Reflection.

It wasn’t until he climbed back up the cliff that he finally accepted the fact that he’d been reborn. But, why would Shen Zhixian appear here at this moment?!!

Did something happen to make Shen Zhixian change his mind and cause the upcoming future events to happen sooner?

As he tensed his thin and weak body, Yan Jin’s dark eyes stared at Shen Zhixian’s hand on the jade bottle. The hand was slender and fair with white fingertips that looked like delicate jade, seeming out of place amongst this dirty snow.

Probably to prevent his wide sleeves from getting in the way, Shen Zhixian lifted his hands and shook them, causing the sleeves to slip down to his elbows, revealing fair, white wrists. A string of crystal jade beads was wounded three to four laps around one wrist.

It made him looked all the more noble.

But Yan Jin remembered how those hands were stained with blood.

Relentless and cruel.

Shen Zhixian had no idea what Yan Jin was thinking. He was afraid that the young man would struggle and end up making his wounds more severe. With his injured hand, he held him firmly while the other hand put aside the small, jade bottle and went looking for another elixir.

Spirit Returning Elixir can replenish a lot of spiritual power in a short time. This thing was precious, especially the top-grade ones found in Shen Zhixian’s house.

Yan Jin probably used up his spiritual power to hold back the chill when he climbed up the cliff. Right now, he couldn’t even protect himself from the cold. His body was frozen stiff, but Spirit Returning Elixir would still work.

“Look! Eat it.” Finally locating the jade bottle containing the Spirit Returning Elixir, Shen Zhixian stuffed the entire bottle in the young man’s hand, then picked up the big urn to the side and surrounded him to prevent the snow from touching his wounds.

Seeing that Yan Jin was holding the jade bottle rigidly, Shen Zhixian remembered that he seemed to have heard a low “Master” coming from the youth’s mouth. He couldn’t help but drop his forehead into his palm. Well, it turned out that Yan Jin had recognized him. No wonder his reaction was so intense.

He groaned for a moment then completely dispelled the worry. Although he didn’t know how Yan Jin recognized him, there was no use to hide his identity now that he’d already been greeted.

The teen stared at him like a hedgehog, his quills raised in defense.

Shen Zhixian breathed a sigh of relief, made a kind gesture, pointed at the jade bottle in the youth’s hand, and said, “Spirit Returning Elixir.”

Then, he pointed to the bottles scattered on the ground. “Cold-Dispelling Pellet, Homeostatic Medicine, Flesh Regrowth Powder. In a bit, I’ll take care of your wounds.”

Yan Jin remained unmoved. He clutched the little jade bottle firmly in his hands and endured again and again. Finally, he opened his mouth and tightly said, “Master came to personally dispose of this disciple?”

After saying this, he raised his head to look at Shen Zhixian. The fifteen-year-old suffered from chronic malnutrition and had terribly hollowed cheeks. His age and calmness made him look particularly distressing.

Shen Zhixian stared at him for a moment. Heart stirring with emotions, he resisted the urge to rub the other party’s head. In the end, he only said, “No.”

He considered his words carefully, not wanting “Shen Zhixian” to suddenly change and arouse suspicion. However, he also didn’t want Yan Jin to remain so hostile to him. The youth was so hurt, and he just couldn’t bear it anymore so he said a few more words.

“Master was too impulsive this afternoon.”

He saw that Yan Jin was just holding the jade bottle and simply took it back, opened the lid, poured out a few pills, and stuffed them into the other person’s mouth.

The cave was very narrow, making it extremely difficult to avoid Shen Zhixian. Moreover, Yan Jin had no strength left. He was forced by Shen Zhixian, and he frowned, pursing his lips, as a gentle spiritual force flowed down, moistening his dry spirit root and slightly easing the chill and pain of the disciplinary whip.

Shen Zhixian smiled slightly, and said softly, “Come here and let me look at your wounds.”

……

After dealing with his wounds while the other party was still in a state of shock, Shen Zhixian left behind the medicine and carefully went back down the mountain.

Although he’d originally intended to send the youth down immediately, he realized that it was too inconsistent with the past “Shen Zhixian.” He had no intention to suddenly and dramatically change attitude.

The first reason was Yan Jin’s attitude. He was afraid of his cold-hearted master. If Shen Zhixian changed his behavior rashly, it would only make Jan Yin more skeptical and suspicious.

The second reason was…

Shen Zhixian raised his hand and rubbed his eyebrows, his expression gradually calming down.

Being a cannon fodder…was not as simple as what was written in novels.
